My First Encounter with Pigeons
Forty-five years ago l had my first encounter with pigeons. Walking home from public school, it seemed like every other house had homing pigeons. l would stop and watch them for hours, l also went around to different lofts to just gaze at them with amazement.
My family were very active hunters, in the spring and fall they went to local farms to train their hunting dogs. My job was to go in the barn and chase out the pigeons for them to to shoot .After the pigeons were shot l would handle them .Looking at them , l noticed how pretty they were and that some even had bands on them.
On one occasion l found two baby pigeons in a nest and my father let me take them home.l was so excited! My first coop was 3′ X 3′ x 2.50′ just like a rabbit hutch. This coop was working fine with me , the pigeons seemed happy. But one day after a couple of months l came home from school and l saw my small coop was gone. l ran to check to see what was going on ,where were my pigeons. To my delight, my father had built me a new loft. Now with their new home ,l could let them out and watch them fly around.
As time went on l would get strays,a big red one from Montreal, a check white flt from Michigan and a check that l don’t remember where he came from.A weekly visit to our local Co-op to shovel up spilled seed, fed them , they had no shots or meds like we do today and l never once lost a bird to sickness.
One time my brother was traveling to Bancroft to a hunting camp, about 200 flying miles ,so l packed up my birds in a cardboard box and sent them with him.My brother arrived in Bancroft and he released the birds the next morning, it took them two days to get home.
Now that l think about it , they must have been remarkable birds, with no training and in the middle of the winter and they made it home. Could it been the love of their small loft or the heart felt love for me?

Girls over Pigeons
When my teenage years came along l started to notice girls more than pigeons. Then came hunting, fishing, boats ,summer jobs and the pigeons took a back burner. These are a lot of the reason young kids lose interest in pigeons, life gets to full.
After growing up in more ways than one, l got married and moved to the country.I built a garage to house my hunting dogs and divide it to keep my toys in. ( Boys and their toys.) l also trapped , play baseball and helped raise my son. With all my activates , it still wasn’t enough ,l felt something was missing so l decide to get back into pigeons.I joined a local club and the C.U, l flew in the club races, but with the cost of clocks l couldn’t afford to buy one.So l had to grab the rubber band off my pigeon as soon as it flew in and with second and minutes to win, l tore the road up driving to a friend’s house to clock my bird in. Doing this l never once ever won a race.
I went to Toronto once with Chris Steacy to look at some lofts and to buy feed. We found a lad who owned Down-view lofts and he was selling all his birds because he was getting a divorce .We bought two Husken Van Reel’s a small ,dark hen and a check ,white flight cock . I got the hen and Chris took the cock.I also bought a red, cock bird which was a Dordin, l don’t remember who l bought this one off of , some other guy in Toronto.Below is a photo of that bird.
For a few years , maybe longer l raced my pigeons in club races and in C.U convention races .As l recall , l had a lot of fun , met a lot of new people and learned a lot.The social part of it was also great, the parties and the get-togethers.
Due to some unforeseen events in my life ,I had to get out of pigeons again,Two of my long time friends that had lofts also , Chris Steacy and Dave Clendening took over my pigeons.I hated to see them go but l had to work at getting my life back on track.
My wife had passed away and l had my son to raise and a life to put back together. I moved back into town where my parents and family lived to help me raise him. This made my life easier.
As time went on l began to heal and started to move on, but still l had no time to care for pigeons. That was a part of my life that had to wait just a little bit longer, but pigeons were all ways on my mind.

Jansen Brothers ,The Greatest Partnership Ever
The Jansen brothers ,one of the greatest partnership to ever impact the pigeon racing world .In my last post l told you about how a partnership could benefit you and your pigeons , this post is a really good example of partnership.Partnership can come in many forms, friends, sister , brothers or families. sliding gate openers . This is a story of famous family partnership, that is still carrying on today.Henri and Pauline Jansen raised two girls and seven boys,on No 6, Schoolstraat in the small village of Arendonk in Belgium. The pigeons have been at this little house since 1912.Everyone pitched in with the work and they all took part in the family sport of racing pigeons. After Henri passed on, the mother Pauline became head of the household. The boys all took part in looking after the birds.
- Adreaan looked after the young birds.
- Louis taking care of the stock birds.
- Jef’s job was the clocks, cleaning the lofts and shipping the birds.
Mother Pauline and daughter Irma took care of the visitors and house hold chores.Everyone had a job to do and they all worked together and did it well.People come from all over the world to visit and see the birds.Everyday they welcome many quests, but l will never get the chance to meet any of them as Louis is the only one left and he is 97 years old.All and all ,This shows how a partnership of brothers and a family formed this fabulous bond, to keep the Jansen pigeons loft intact to breed the greatest racing homers ever.Fly with Me
